Cryptical Development

Cryptical Development is a San Fernando Valley jam band led by guitarist and singer Andy Roth, billing itself as an 'outlaw jam band' rather than a strict tribute. The set list runs Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band alongside Traffic, Phish and other jam repertoire, and the group carries an unusual front line — Matt Brown on keys, Rob Fresco on bass, Owen Goldman on drums and Jim Scimonetti on EWI, an electronic wind instrument. They are Valley regulars, playing Gary and Wendy's Hippie Oasis in Reseda and Uncle Studios in Van Nuys, and have appeared at the Skull & Roses festival. Roth has said publicly that the Dead fanbase in Southern California has become very active again in recent years. Beyond a Facebook page and scattered event listings, little is published about the band's history or formation.
