NUGZ formed in San Jose in October 2018: Derek Bischof on guitar, James Miller on keys, Dino Nickolas on bass, and Rob Parker on drums, all singing. The band's thing is the medley — popular songs folded into feel-good arrangements over long grooves — with the Grateful Dead, Phish, String Cheese Incident, Pink Floyd, and the Stones as the source material. Miller and Parker also play in Dead Roses and Aardvark, which is why a NUGZ set at Winters Tavern tends to turn into a Pacifica family reunion.
