Strangers Stopping Strangers

Hoboken, NJ

Not yet rated

Strangers Stopping Strangers formed in Hoboken when Jeff Greenspan moved up from Maryland and pitched the idea to James Calleo, an established Jersey City singer/songwriter working in Americana and alt-folk; per New Jersey Monthly the band had barely started gigging when the pandemic shut things down, and it spent the lockdown cutting videos and learning the catalog. Their approach is deliberately not mimicry: Calleo told the magazine they learned the structures and key riffs but pull the rest from their own folk and bluegrass influences, with vocal harmony and open-ended improvisation the focus. A post-pandemic show at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City cemented their local following, and they have since played Brooklyn Bowl, the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, and the Williams Center in Rutherford. In early 2026 they became the first live band to play inside the Liberty Science Center planetarium in Jersey City, a 360-degree audio/visual show that sold out in three days and drew Fox 5 NY coverage. They are booked by Providence Music Group.
