The Kind have been playing Grateful Dead music around Blacksburg and Virginia's New River Valley since 1986, when the band booked for a 20th birthday party fell through and the host's friends took the stage instead. They describe what they do as 'hillbilly psychedelic folk rock.' Rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist Wendy Godley is among the founding members still playing regularly, and the band holds a reunion show each summer at the Port O'Call in the Outer Banks.
