Grateful Shred started in 2016 when Los Angeles country songwriter Austin McCutchen filled a night of his residency at The Griffin in Atwater Village by putting his housemates on stage to play a Grateful Dead set. The current lineup is McCutchen (vocals, guitar), Dan Horne (bass, pedal steel), John Lee Shannon (guitar), Adam MacDougall (keys), Mikaela Davis (vocals) and Corey Rose (drums), with three guitars rather than the usual two. They deliberately do not recreate shows note for note, leaning on loose West Coast harmonies, long improvisation and deep cuts from across the Dead catalog. A 2017 video of the band playing the Hollywood Bowl parking lot before a Dead & Company show pushed them from local act to national touring band; they now play theaters and festivals such as Outside Lands and Electric Forest, and released a studio album, Might As Well, in June 2025 on their own Liberty Hair Farm Records.
